Ocular Hypertension Monitoring

Ocular hypertension can be a hidden threat to your vision. Also known as elevated eye pressure, it doesn’t always cause symptoms but it can increase the risk of developing glaucoma, which may lead to irreversible vision loss if untreated.

At Sherratt Opticians, our specialised monitoring service offers thorough, ongoing care to keep your eye pressure under control, coordinating seamlessly with both NHS and private referral pathways to ensure the best outcomes for your vision.

What is ocular hypertension?

Ocular hypertension (OHT) occurs when the pressure inside your eye is higher than normal but hasn’t yet caused detectable damage to vision or optic nerve – the bundle of nerve fibres that carries visual information from your eye to your brain.

This condition affects approximately 3-4% of people over 40 and significantly increases the risk of developing glaucoma. Regular monitoring is therefore essential, to make sure your optician is able to spot it before it causes any lasting harm. By picking it up early, we can begin treatment and avoid future complications.

Why monitoring matters

Regular monitoring lets us track changes in your eye pressure and identify early signs of glaucoma. Early intervention can prevent or slow vision loss, helping you maintain your sight and avoid the challenges that come with progressive visual impairment.

How we monitor OHT

We take a proactive approach to monitoring OHT, using a combination of advanced technology, personalised schedules, and coordinated care.

We utilise state-of-the-art technology including OCT scanning, visual field testing, and precise pressure monitoring to provide comprehensive assessments. Retinal photography and tonometry may also be used to document optic nerve health, depending on your consultant’s recommendations.

Personalised Monitoring Schedules

Each patient receives an individually tailored monitoring plan based on their specific risk factors, pressure levels and consultant recommendations.
