Our child’s eyesight plays a crucial role in how they learn, grow and explore the world. Because children’s eyes develop rapidly, regular eye examinations are one of the best ways to protect their vision.
Many childhood eye conditions have no obvious symptoms. Plus, children often assume the way they see is completely ‘normal’ so they may not realise they have vision problems. Regular eye exams can detect these issues early, when treatment is most effective, helping to prevent long-term vision problems and supporting healthy development.
Signs of vision problems
Squinting or rubbing their eyes frequently
Sitting very close to screens or holding books close
Complaining of blurred vision or headaches
Difficulty concentrating or seeing the board at school
Covering one eye, tilting the head or closing one eye to see better
Avoiding activities that require good vision, like sports that require good depth perception.
Common childhood eye conditions
Refractive Errors
Short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism are increasingly common in children. These can usually be corrected effectively with glasses or contact lenses.
Amblyopia (lazy eye)
This occurs when one eye doesn't develop normal vision. Early treatment is essential as the condition becomes much harder to treat after age seven.
Strabismus (squint)
When eyes don't align properly, it can affect depth perception and lead to amblyopia if left untreated.

We routinely see children from three years old and can examine younger children if there are concerns. Children’s eye examinations usually take 20–30 minutes and are designed to be comfortable and engaging. Our team works closely with both children and parents to tailor eye care and contact lens solutions to each child’s needs.
SUPPORTING SEN CHILDREN
We are happy to examine Special Educational Needs (SEN) Children. Sometimes a get to know you visit is helpful for the childs comfort, this can be arranged with our practice staff. We are also able to make special adaptations to frames to suit a childs needs if required.
With the right treatment, your child can see clearly, learn confidently, and enjoy all the activities they love. Our friendly team is here to support both you and your child every step of the way.
